SCCA PRO RACING WORLD CHALLENGE
2011 SEASON

NEWS FROM THE WORLD CUP OF MOTORSPORTS
SCCA PRO RACING WORLD CHALLENGE SERIES

The SCCA PRO RACING WORLD CHALLENGE is one of the premier sport car racing series in North America. This series has made many visits to Canada in the last two decades.

In 2011 the SCCA Pro World Challenge will visit Canada only once. They will appear in a double header at the Mosport Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend, May 20-22, 2011.

The SCCA World Challenge Racing Series run in 3 classes in the same races (GT,GTS,TC). This will lead to a car count between 35 and 40 per race, and with 3 classes running together should make for great passing action.

O'CONNELL, FOSS AND POVOLEDO WIN IN BRASELTON

"You always want to win your home race, and the biggest thing is the accomplishment of the team," O'Connell said. "We're improving the car, we still have a lot to learn but I'm so excited about what everyone is doing at Cadillac."

"I have to thank Mike Jenkins from TRAXXAS to give me this opportunity to drive the TRAXXAS/St. Jude Ford Mustang this year," Foss said. "We brought in Capaldi Racing to run the car for us, they did a phenomenal job to win [in the first weekend] and finish the season with a win. You can't ask for more. John Horton is my engineer, he set the car up and it was phenomenal today. I could not do wrong in that car it was so good. The Pirelli tires, they held up so amazing, I've never been on a tire where you can just drive them so hard and so aggressive and they're just there lap after lap. I couldn't even blow them out when I did the big burn out at the end, they're so good."

"The highest note is that we won the most competitive race of World Challenge this year," Povoledo said. "The Volkswagen came with the big APR team, my good friend Josh Hurley is one of the best drivers in Touring Car racing. It was a real clash of titans, you had Aschenbach, Hurley and myself all going at it and trading the lead back and forth with Josh was a lot of fun."

GRAND PRIX OF MONTEREY
MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA, CA. - SEPTEMBER 16-18, 2011

SKEEN, BROWN AND ASCHENBACH WIN IN MONTEREY

"Winning the race is just awesome," Skeen said. "We're really glad to be back in victory circle for CRP Racing. It's been a while - we had some tough luck at Mid-Ohio and Sonoma. This team really deserves to have a car back up front."

Brown's comments were, "I started it just like every other and went as hard and as fast as I could at the start," I watched the guys moving around at the back. Luckily, or unluckily, there was a GT car that stalled and really screwed up the one line. I just put my head down and worked my butt off."

"The crazy thing was, I couldn't see the lights because of the way I was staged," Aschenbach said. "There was a car blocking my view, so my crew chief had to actually call the start for me. I was a little bit late to jump the start, but fortunately everyone else around me was as well. I was headed into turn one, and everyone slowed on the inside of the track and I went to the outside. That was a big part of how I was able to do what I did today."

INFINEON GRAND PRIX
SONOMA, CA. - AUGUST 26-28, 2011

LONG, CUNNINGHAM AND ASHENBACH WIN RACE 1 AT SONOMA

"There's three rounds to go and points are very close," Long said. "World Challenge rewards you for laps led, leading a lap, and qualifying as well, so you really have to put a complete weekend together. You can't just go out there and banzai the last lap."

"It feels great. World Challenge is even more competitive than ever this year," Cunnigham said. "Last year, GTS had some growth to do as a new class, and since the start of the 2011 season it's been really competitive - so competitive that our car hasn't been on the top step. The Acura has been good all year, just not quite as good as the higher horsepower, bigger displacement cars. But the RealTime Racing guys kept working hard, trying to make sure that we had the best weapon to use out there and a track like Sonoma is definitely a good track for the Acura."

"We obviously had a very good points day today," Aschenbach said. "The minute Povoledo fell out, it was pretty much points, take care of the car, and keep it on the track. Fortunately, this track suits the Civic very well. Hats off to the Compass360 guys and Honda HPD for making it happen. It was a great car and a great track for us, and we're really happy to take the win."

RACE 2 - LONG, CROSLAND AND POVOLEDO GET WINS

"It's a big weekend, this is very timely," Long said. "It was more work than maybe the gap shows in both of those races, especially today. Traffic didn't go my way, and that's not anybody's fault, it's just racing. That's what makes it challenging. Racing Andy, he was really good on the brakes and I'm racing with maximum [REWARDS weight] so I had to work to make the brakes and tires last."

___________________

"We ran into a bit of traffic and it played into my hands," Crosland said. "I just got the advantage off of the hairpin and it went my way. It was a really good race, really close and an awesome battle."

"There were a lot of points where I would get slowed up, and then he would get slowed up. The pass was one time where I got the advantage and got past him and got the win at the end. I had a really good car and knew if I got past him I could keep the lead, but he made me work for it."

___________________

"It was extremely intense out there," Canadian driver Povoledo said. "I had to run the perfect line, had to be perfect on the brakes every single time. The car started off monsterously loose. It's always exciting if you're here for the drift show, but unfortunately when you have such a strong competitor as Lawson on your tail, it made it really intense at the start. The stability of this Volvo C30 under braking is second to none. I just put my head down, hit my marks and was really smart in traffic."

MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE
LEXINGTON, OHIO - AUGUST 5-7, 2011

MID-OHIO RACE 1 - ALEX FIGGE TAKES HIS FIRST GT WIN

Alex Figge of Denver, CO. took his maiden WC win in his No. 9 K-PAX Racing Volvo S60.

"I saw a hole between the two Pats and was able to get in there," Figge said of his move to the front in his all wheel drive Volvo. Pat Long was a complete gentleman and knew I was on the outside of him, and he certainly didn't force the issue. I was able to keep the inside through the keyhole."

Johnny O'Connell of Flowery Branch Georgia takes the GT win for Cadillac in the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac CTS-V Coupe.

"It doesn't matter how you get 'em, it's just gettin' 'em," O'Connell said after the race. "After all the work that everyone at Cadillac Racing has done, it is nice to get the win today. There are some really good cars out there today. That's got to be the closest battle we've had all year, where you had both Volvos out front, both Corvettes were extremely strong. We did not qualify where we wanted, but we had a couple of issues this morning that we got sorted out."

DASKALOS, MUSSER AND POVOLEDO GET CLASS WINS

"I didn't get the greatest launch," Daskalos said. "I was able to sneak into third. I was able to get by [Mike] Skeen on the start. I tucked in behind Gaples. I just ran a smart race. I was able to Gaples off in traffic. Then I just followed James Sofronas for a while - saving my tires. He also got caught in traffic and it was to my benefit to take the lead, and I was able to hold it the rest of the way.

"Coming into three, there was traffic up ahead and he had to get out of the throttle. I was able to get a run on him coming out of four into five. I just late braked him in down into five and we went side by side through five and was able to hold it through six. James ran a good, smart race like he always does. I saw Sofronas. I pushed kind of hard through witchcraft and a couple of sections where I felt I was better than James and was able to gap him through there. He was better than me through the slow stuff. But, I was able to hold him off for the finish."

New to the series, Musser, in his No. 05 Momentum/Race Fuel Energy Drink Chevrolet Camaro started 13th in the GTS class to take the win.

Musser said after the race:"As far as the race goes, I was pretty nervous. We started 31st. That's 13th in GTS. But, it doesn't matter if you are first in GTS because you still have a bunch of cars in front of you. Sure enough Randy Pobst stalled and we almost got collected in that mess. I literally stood on the brakes, veered left and almost had to stop in the middle of the track to get around him. Actually, that was not my normal mode. Normally I'm aggressive and I'll just stay on the gas and go into the dirt. But, I knew that this might be my only chance to race this year and I knew I had a [good] car under me to win if I didn't bend it. I chose the more [cautious] approach. I got around the car. I put my head down. I drove that thing so hard. I was using dirt, curbs, everything I could to make it work. But, it all worked out. I could not be happier for my team."

"That was one of the toughest, most exciting, most taxing races I've been in in many years," Povoledo of Toronto, Canada, said about his touring car win. "Ron Zitza really ran me hard. We had so many side by side moments. I hope like heck that was all caught on film because that's going to make some great viewing for the fans."

STREETS OF ST. PETERSBURG
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (March 25-27, 2011)

STREETS OF ST. PETERSBURG - RACE 1 GT TO PATRICK LONG

"Mike was running very strong and certainly keeping me honest," Long said. "As we came into the back of the traffic on the last lap, the black S2000 lost it just coming out of the first of the double rights in the back session. I missed him narrowly, literally by inches, and unfortunately that left Mike with a blocked racetrack and I was able to just slither through. It was unfortunate for him, good for us, and that's what it's all about with multiple classes."

Long added: "It's an exciting series, and I think World Challenge has progressed since then last time I raced here in 2006," Long said. "The tires are one thing, the multiple class structure adds an endurance element to the track and to the race series. I think it's a lot of fun, but its certainly challenging, especially on a street course. It's unbelievably busy, but I have a lot of respect for the GTS and Touring Cars who have their own battle going on. There were a lot of yellow flags today, and that's not the way we want to put on a show but hopefully we'll run a little bit cleaner out there. It's tough going out there, everybody is doing their best out there and we'll try to put on a better show tomorrow."

GTS went to Jason von Kluge. "I couldn't ask for anything better today," von Kluge said. "The car worked great, the Pirellis worked great. The restart was a little bit crazy, they said there was going to be lights but there was no lights, so I just went when I saw tire smoke. The guy in front of me didn't go anywhere and I managed to make it around him so that was nice. Unfortunately there was a lot of cautions today, but I think that helped me."

"When you come to a series like this, you have to expect the competition to be fierce. RealTime and Peter come with very well prepared vehicles, and that's what you have to expect. The Boss Mustang really came through for me today, I couldn't ask for anything better."

Lawson Aschenbach won the TC class in his Honda Civic Si. "It's just great to be back," Aschenbach said in his return to World Challenge. "It's an amazing series, it's an exciting series. There's nothing like sprint racing. It's nice that it's your car, it's not two guys' car. It's fun. I enjoy it, especially street racing. There are so many factors in a race like this – the walls, the pavement changes, the other cars. There were so many cars on the track today, and I'm just super excited to be back. I can't thank Karl Thompson and the whole Compass360 team for having me this year, and with this Honda I think we have a shot to race for the championship this year."

STREETS OF ST. PETERSBURG - PATRICK LONG TAKES RACE 2 AS WELL

Patrick Long took the 2nd race of the season in this weekends double header. "It came down to traffic. I mounted my charge with about eight to go and got up to his bumper. I waited for the right time to roll the dice and just take the opposite of whatever option he took. Because I had no pressure from behind, I could just wait for one of those factors to play out. It happened on the back straightaway and we could have gone side by side in the kink but he was to my right, which was outside, and gave me plenty of room", Long said.

Eric Foss earned his first World Challenge race in GTS. "I've watched World Challenge since I was a kid, and getting an opportunity to win in this series and stand on the top spot of the podium is something I've been dreaming about for years," Foss said.

Touring Car went to Tristan Herbert. "This is the perfect example of why people get involved with local programs in SCCA," Herbert said. "That's where I started, with a driver's school with the [Washington, D.C. Region] and worked my way up. This is exactly why you get into racing, and what you can do with it if you stick to it and work really hard. It's awesome, it hasn't even hit me yet."
