ONTARIO SPORTSMAN SERIES - 2010

The top visiting Race Series at Mosport Speedway

ONTARIO SPORTSMAN SERIES
LUCAS OIL SPORTSMAN CUP - SEASON 2010
PRESENTED BY BENSON AUTO PARTS

This Stock Car series was formerly known as the CASCAR Sportsman Series, but was abandoned by NASCAR as the CASCAR SUPER SERIES turned into the NASCAR CANADIAN TIRE SERIES. Not to be stopped, the Ontario Sportsman Series was created to carry on.
The first year (2007) saw a 12 race schedule with an appearance at the Mosport Oval June 16th 2007. The other events were at Cayuga Speedway June 23, Sauble Speedway June 30, Peterborough Speedway July 21, Sunset Speedway August 25 and Cayuga Speedway again on september 1. Each race day included qualifying and two 50 lap races.
A total of 24 drivers received points in the inaugural year, and the numbers are expected to grow in coming years.

New in 2009 the Ontario Sportsman Series was pleased to announce Lucas Oil as the title sponsor for the series, and Benson Auto parts as the presenting Sponsor.

In 2010, the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup will again be competing at tracks throughout southern Ontario, including Sunset Speedway, Mosport Speedway, Peterborough Speedway, Sauble Speedway and Flamboro Speedway.

CoOLE WEBER FINS FINAL AT FLAMBORO

The first half of the race was dominated by Jay Doerr with Dave Connelly, Josh Wood, Cole Weber, and Matt Robblee close behind.

The race was caution filled - two due to Jason Lancaster - kept the first 50 laps slow. A spin by Chad McGlynn brought out another caution in lap 68, and a second spin by Chad McGlynn in got the yellow out again in lap 84.

In lap 93, Dave Connelly - in the championship title race - tangled with Jay Doerr to bring the caution flag out once again in lap 93.

Lap 97 saw Robblee hitting the wall at turn 3, setting up the finish for a green white checker, with Cole Weber led Josh Wood, Kelly Balson and Shawn Hewitt leading the pack.

The race had to end under caution when Kenny Forth flipped in the front straight - emerging unharmed, but spilling fuel from his car.

Cole Weber took the victory.

Having been rained out twice this year, the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup series ran twin 75 lap features in an attempt to make up for the postponement.

Josh Wood was in complete control in the first race, leading through the first 60 laps. On the receiving end of a punt from Shawn McGlynn, Wood was forced into the pits for some extreme bodywork repairs, handing the lead to the black #24 of Brennan Didero. But Didero was also turned into the wall on the penultimate lap, the caution period bringing out the checkered flag due to time limitations. The fortunate, first time winner was past Mosport champion Kelly Balson, who had earlier been a victim of the Turn Two wall.

"Wow, that was unexpected," declared Balson. "And to do it here, five minutes from home, is great!"

Former NASCAR Canadian Tire Series driver Doug Brown was second to the line, followed by the #81 of Shawn McGlynn.

The second race was equally as rough with no fewer than six caution periods slowing the procession, and only 10 of the 15 original starters making it to the checkered flag.

In the end, it was series rookie Jay Doerr (#40) going flag to flag for the victory, his second of the season, crossing the stripe 15 car lengths ahead of his nearest rival. Shawn McGlynn recorded his second podium position of the night, holding off Dan Prudhomme by inches to claim second place. Balson and Josh Wood, both driving damaged machinery, rounded out the top five.

JAY DOERR AND DAVE CONNELLY GET 1 EACH

After 2 rained out weekends we finally have a season start for the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup.

The Lucas Oil Sportsman Series cup cars provided some of the fastest and most competitive racing in Ontario with their twin 50 laps around Canada's Toughest 1/3 mile oval with two first time victors at Peterborough.

The first 50 lap battle was won by Jay Doerr who made his 1st ever appearance at Peterborough Speedway, spent the last week watching Youtube videos to get a feel for the track, and Jay Doerr parked his Once Upon a Child sponsored #40 Monte Carlo in victory lane. In the 2nd 50 lap race, Jay Doerr placed 3rd behind 2nd place Shawn McGlynn (81) and first time series winner Dave Connelly in his Schneiders/ Metro #82.
