KEVIN HINDS TAKES CHAMPIONSHIP

Past Mosport champion Ryan Oosterholt made a rare return visit to the Speedway last Saturday night, and powered away with the Pure Stock feature victory, leading the #57 RadMan Pontiac of Kevin Hinds to the checkered flag.

But it was Hinds who celebrated the most, as with a season long record of 11 heat race wins, coupled with four feature victories, the Whitby resident claimed his first Mosport Pure Stock championship.

"I've been at this for six years, and it's always been 'Checkers or Wreckers' before," laughed Hinds. "This year, I focused on staying smart on the track, and it paid off with the title."

Kyle Hope (#03 Sensational Signs/ PS Auto Wreckers Cavalier) took Saturday's checkered flag immediately behind Hinds' #57 Grand Am, locking up second place in the year end Pure Stock standings.

PETERBOROUGH'S ROB FINDALL TAKES INVITATIONAL

Mosport Speedway hosted their third annual Pure Stock Invitational last Saturday, and it was an invader from the dirt track ranks who powered away with the Victor's Laurels.

Rob Flindall, a Peterborough High School Auto Shop teacher, followed in his father's footsteps and developed his race craft on Brighton Speedway's quarter mile clay oval. But the lessons learned there have obviously transferred to the pavement wars.

Wrestling the lead away from Mosport Pure Stock points leader Kevin Hinds on lap four, Flindall opened up a healthy advantage over challengers Anthony DiBello (#16 DiBello Towing) and Hinds, holding the point until a lap 20 red flag. John Baker Jr., at the wheel of the #40 Honda CRX had climbed to fourth place from his tail end starting position, but on lap 20, the power plant screamed 'enough', expiring dramatically on the back straight, necessitating a massive cleanup.

On the restart, DiBello got the better launch to grab the lead, but Flindall would not be denied, reclaiming the point on lap 24 and running out the remaining 11 tours at the front of the back, and taking the feature race victory.

"I banged the wall on the restart and I thought I was done," admitted Flindall. "But once I knew everything was still straight, I put my head down and went for it. That was an amazing race, and gives us the first win for the Sidey NAPA/ State Farm Insurance team."

DiBello defended the home track's reputation with a well deserved second place result, crossing the stripe just two car lengths behind Flindall, with Hinds piloting his #57 RadMan Grand Am to a top three finish. Duane Jeffery, making his Mosport return at the wheel of his recently acquired #0 Pure Stock, took the checkered flag in fourth place, Henk Mulders (#99) rebounding from being a lap down to round out the top five.

KEVIN HINDS TAKES VICTORY

It was 'share and share alike' for Kyle Hope and Kevin Hinds, as these two Pure Stock rivals split Saturday's four heat dashes, each claiming a pair of victories. But sharing obviously only goes so far for racing drivers, as Hinds took control of the Pure Stock feature contest on lap 6 and greedily held on to come home with win in the 20 lap finale.

Tracking down early race leader Jeff VanDeBelt (#33), Hinds assumed the point as the pair entered Turn Three and then concentrated on extending his gap over the 16 car field. A lap 11 caution period negated his advantage and the restart allowed Anthony DiBello (#16 DiBello Towing) to slip into second place, with Ryan Oosterholt (in Jeff Scott's #96 Sunbird) following suite and filling the third place position. A pair of late race cautions gave Hinds some concern, but he was able to hold on, driving his #57 RadMan Pontiac into the Mosport Winner's Circle for the fifth time this year.

"Every time we get a win, we get hit with some penalty weight, and my car got real fat. I told myself that I didn't want to have to add any more weight, but once you're out front, it's hard to slow down," said Hinds.

DiBello crossed the stripe two car lengths in arrears of the race winner, with Oosterholt completing the podium positions. Kyle Hope (#03 Sensational Signs Cavalier) worked his way forward from the back of the grid to take a well deserved fourth place result. The three way battle for a top five finish was won by Nick Mulders by half a car length from his father Henk, with Jeff VanDeBelt rounding out the top half dozen finishers.

JUSTIN VANDEBELT WINS FIRST FEATURE RACE

The action continued in the Pure Stock division as three different drivers took the checkered flag in the four heat races.

In the night's feature race, the #00 Oshawa Auto Parts Neon of Bowmanville's Justin Vandebelt started in the fourth position, but was able to move up quickly and grab the lead on the opening lap and despite some great pressure was able to hold on for his first feature win.

Last week's feature winner, Corey Hayward and his #70 Prelude were also busy moving up through the pack. Although he started at the back of the field, by Lap 5, Hayward had moved into third position and by Lap 8 had moved into second just behind Vandebelt.

From there, Hayward tried desperately to get around Vandebelt, but the #00 had an answer for everything thrown at him and was able to squeak out a narrow victory.

"We worked all week getting the car running better and faster and we wrecked it again," Vandebelt said following a fracas on the front stretch involving a lapped car. "This wasn't quite the way I envisioned winning."

CORY HAYWARD WINS FIRST PURE STOCK FEATURE

Saturday night, birthday boy Anthony DiBello stretched his Pure Stock division winning streak to eight races, taking a pair of victories in the 8 lap heat dashes. His streak unfortunately came to a halt on lap 10 of the feature when DiBello was forced into the pits to have a dangling rear bumper removed from the #16 DiBello Towing Honda, the stop relegating him to the tail end of the 16 car field and handing the point to Kevin Hinds and his #57 RadMan Pontiac.

On a lap 11 caution period restart, Hinds suddenly found himself in the crosshairs of the charging #70 Prelude of Corey Hayward. Crossing the starting line in a dead heat on lap 13, Hayward out braked Hinds into the first turn, emerging with lead, translating the move into the race win, his first feature victory of the season.

"We just picked this car up a couple of weeks ago and we're still trying to get the bugs out of it," laughed Hayward. "Our goal was just trying to get this thing to the finish."

Once relegated to the runner up position, with two to go, Hinds had to concern himself with the resurging ex Shannon Kimmerly #16 Honda of DiBello. In a nose to tail finish, Hinds held on to second place, DiBello completing his comeback with a well deserved third place result. Kyle Rose (#03) crossed the stripe in fourth spot while Justin VanDeBelt (#00) pipped Heath MacDonald on the last lap for a top five finish.

ANTHONY DIBELLO WINS AGAIN

To claim a Racing Hat Trick, scoring two heat race victories followed by a win in the feature, is an accomplishment to be proud of. To do it twice in two consecutive weekends is virtually impossible.

But on Saturday night, Cannington's Anthony DiBello scored the Double/ Triple using his DiBello Towing mount to sweep the Pure Stock contests.

Starting the 20 lap Pure Stock feature from the outside of Row Five, within three laps DiBello had moved forward to challenge the race leading #70 Acura of Corey Hayward. Stalking the leader for four full laps, on the eighth circuit DiBello made his move, wrestling the point away from Hayward as the leading duo exited Turn Four. Surviving a Lap 14 caution period restart (the yellow brought out to recover the front wheel less #63 of Ray Smith from the Turn Four wall), DiBello, Hayward and the quickly closing #57 RadMan Grand Am of Kevin Hinds made it a three car dash to the checkers, DiBello securing his second feature win in a row.

Unfortunately for Hayward, he was penalized in post race technical inspection moving Hinds into the runner up spot, with the #03 of Kyle Hope claiming the final podium position.

ANTHONY DIBELLO JR. WINS FEATURE

Anthony DiBello has stepped up his racing programme this year, and has been a regular competitor in Mosport's Sportsman division. But over the past couple weeks, Anthony has been competing as the team driver for Matt Boyce, running his new Pure Stock car as the #94.

In a recently acquired, unfamiliar and untested Honda, Anthony was put to the test on Saturday night. But the Cannington resident managed to 'keep his foot in it' and came away with a three race sweep on the evening, claiming not only both heat race victories (each time over Ryan Oosterholt), but also the win in the 20 lap feature as well.

Starting from the inside of the second row, DiBello leapfrogged past the suddenly ailing #99 Sunbird of pole sitter Henk Mulders to snatch the lead on the opening lap. With Corey Hayward's #70 Prelude filling his mirrors, DiBello watched as Oosterholt in Jeff Scott's #96 mount, joined the now three car fray.

On lap nine, Oosterholt slipped past Hayward in Turn Three to claim the runner up position, and although he was able to edge ever closer to the race leader, his charge fell short, DiBello taking the checkered flag six car lengths in front of the red, Nofty's Fries #96.

"Not a bad result for throwing this car back together last night. We worked on this thing till four o'clock this morning to get it ready," said DiBello.

Hayward faded slightly, but held on for a third place result, and was able to maintain a healthy (1/2 track!) advantage over fourth place finisher Heath MacDonald (#69). In a tight scramble for a top five finish, Bryan Holmes (#82) fought off the #63 Sable of Ray Smith and Jeff VandeBelt's #00 Dodge for the position.

KYLE HOPE WINS ANOTHER FEATURE

Mosport Speedway's Pure Stock division closed out the night's activities with their 20 lap feature.

Kevin Hinds in his #57 RadMan Grand Am had taken charge of the evening's two heat dashes, holding off Kyle Hope (#03) and Corey Hayward (#70) for a pair of victories.

Hinds had the pole for the night's finale, and was looking to claim a three race sweep. But Hope had other plans.

Stalking the race leading Pontiac, Hope moved up from his third row grid position to claim second place by lap two. Intensely pressuring Hinds for three full tours of the Mosport half-mile, eventually the Whitby driver bobbled as the pair exited Turn Two, Hope taking advantage of the situation to grab the low line and squirt through and into the lead.

Hope claimed the victory, the #03 Residential Auto/Sensational Signs Cavalier crossing the stripe ahead of Hinds. Corey Hayward in his #70 Algonquin Property Services/ Toronto Body Parts Acura earning a third place result.

"We definitely don't need a six cylinder to win here, this little car will work just fine," laughed Hope. "But this is not a 'one man' show; I need to thank my crew for getting us to Victory Lane."

Matt Boyce (#94) and Heath MacDonald (#69) rounded out the top five feature finishers.

KYLE HOPE WINS FEATURE

Mechanical issues were a major factor in the 20 lap Pure Stock feature race, but by no means does that lessen Kyle Hope's achievement, as the driver of the #3 Sensational Signs Cavalier claimed a dominating victory in the class finale.

Snatching the point away from race leader Jeff VandeBelt on lap three, Hope never looked back, eventually stretching the gap over the remainder of the field to nearly a straightaway. Unfortunately, a major motor meltdown in the Kevin Hinds #57 Grand Am left a trail of fluid on the track, bringing out the caution flag and eliminating Hope's advantage.

Not to be denied, at the drop of the green flag in a Green/ White/ Checkered dash to the stripe, Hope simply pulled away, taking the checkers by eight car lengths over VandeBelt's #00 Oshawa Auto Parts Neon. "We've had some problems over the past couple of nights, but the crew got everything in order, they kept us in this one," proclaimed Hope. Gary Fallis in his smoke belching #64 Pineridge Automotive Mustang claimed third place with Reg Smith (#63 Ford) and the #99 Sunbird of Henk Mulders completing the lead lap finishers.

Craig Robertson, the morning host on 94.9 The Rock was given the honour of driving the #67 Thorsons EVT Honda this night, and although slightly off of the pace, crossed the stripe in sixth place. "That was a lot fun-er than it looked," laughed Robertson. "I am just really glad that the car and I both finished in one piece!"

KEVIN HINDS WINS ANOTHER FEATURE

Oshawa's Corey Hayward is quickly turning into a force to be reckoned with for the Mosport Pure Stock competitors.

With some recently revitalized confidence, Hayward came to the green flag from Row Three to start the Pure Stock feature, but immediately barreled his #70 Algonquin Property Services Acura up through the middle of the pack to claim the point by the end of the first lap.

With a clear track ahead of him, Hayward stretched his advantage while Gary Fallis (#64), Jeff VandeBelt (#00) and Anthony DiBello (#89) all took turns in the runner up position. On lap five, Kevin Hinds (#57 Rad Man Pontiac) having moved up from the tail end of the field, slotted into second place and began inching closer to the distant Integra of Hayward. Stalking the #70 Acura for five solid laps, at the race's half way point, Hinds made his move, swinging past Hayward as the pair headed into the third corner.

A slight bobble on lap 13 by Hinds, ("I looked down to switch on the engine fan and had to do some 'dirt tracking' to save the car") allowed Hayward to close the gap, but regaining his focus, Hinds pulled away, taking the checkered flag eight car lengths in front of Hayward.

KEVIN HINDS WINS FEATURE

Simple math states that four cannot go into One evenly, but it worked out on the opening lap of the Pure Stock feature as a successful four-wide dash into the first corner set the racing tone for the night.

Following this attention grabbing opening, the action continued as the 13 car Pure Stock field jockeyed for position. Eventually, Duane Jeffery cleared the scramble, immediately tailed by the #57 Rad Man Grand Am of Kevin Hinds. Using the longer outside line, Hinds circled the half-mile Mosport oval door handle to door handle with the #26 Car-Du Camaro before finally emerging with the race lead. Defending series champion Kevin Pickford, who was hampered the most by traffic, wrestled free of the pack and slowly began inching closer to the front running battle.

Officially, Hinds led each of the remaining laps on his way to the checkered flag, but that victory came only after multiple back straight passes between himself and Jeffery.

"That was a beauty race, we had a wicked battle going on," expressed Hinds. "I had a little bit of paint swapping going on with Duane, but it was nothing serious, just a little bit of 'Kiss and Run'."

Jeffery and Pickford were originally presented with the second and third place trophies, but each were penalized for technical infractions, handing Corey Hayward (#70 Algonquin Property Services Acura) the second place result, his best of the season, while Heath MacDonald (#69 Canada Cartage Shadow) was promoted to the final step of the podium.

KYLE HOPE GETS FIRST WIN EVER

It would be unfair to simply say that Kyle Hope went flag to flag to claim the win in the Pure Stock feature, for the driver of the #03 PS Auto/ Standard Auto Wreckers car survived race long pressure from past champion Jeff Scott and Kevin Hinds to secure his first career feature victory.

Snagging the race lead on the opening circuit, Hope immediately came under pressure from the hard charging trio of Scott (#96), Hinds (#57) and Duane Jeffery (#26). While positions were swapped behind him, Hope never lost focus or put a wheel wrong as he led the four car procession. A mad scramble in Turn Two when the lead pack encountered lapped traffic resulted in a spin by Jeffery, bringing out the yellow flag and allowing the leaders to finally take a breath.

Back under green, Hope reasserted his dominance, holding off Hinds and Scott in the final six lap sprint to the checkers.

On the final lap, a tangle between Scott and Ryan DiBello resulted in them both being disqualified.

Jeffery, who had been relegated to the tailend of the 15 car field for his incident, charged back through the pack to claim the third spot, edging defending series champion Kevin Pickford (#19) on the last lap for the position.

KEVIN PICKFORD TAKES THE NIGHT

The battle for the evening's Pure Stock bragging rights was resolved only after a hard fought, 20 lap scrap between a pair of past champions and a host of potential future title holders.

Sophomore driver Kyle Hope was the first out of the gate, snagging the early lead from the outside of the front row. Demoted to second place on lap three by two time champion Jeff Scott (#96 Sunbird), Hope found himself further displaced when Kevin Hinds (#57) and the hard charging Nick Mulders (#89) pushed through to challenge Scott for the overall lead. Hinds and Mulders were eventually able to wrestle top spot away from Scott and each took their turn on the point until the motor expired in Mulder's Cavalier, the Turn Two, lap 10 tangle handed the lead back to Scott.

Defending series champion Kevin Pickford (#19 Buick Skyhawk), having been involved in an early race incident, hade been charging forward, picking off his rivals one at a time. With five to go Pickford moved onto Scott's back bumper, applying the pressure for three full tours before taking the long, outside route through Turn Two, Pickford edging clear of Scott as the pair streamed down the backstraight and taking the lead, a position that he would not relinquish.

"You have no idea how much competition we have here," exclaimed Pickford. "Once I finally caught up to Jeff, he was protecting the inside line so I knew the only way to get past him was to try going wide coming off of the turns."

To add insult to injury, Duane Jeffery was also able to get around Scott to claim second place, the two drivers crossing the stripe nose to tail.

KEVIN HINDS WINS FEATURE

The newly rebadged Pure Stock (formerly Six Or Less) cars were given the honour of initiating the 2011 season with four different drivers, Kevin Hinds, Kyle Hope, Nick Mulders and defending series champion Kevin Pickford, claiming heat race victories.

A host of mechanical, early season maladies limited the feature grid to 13 starters, but there was no shortage of racing action, especially at the front of the field.

Family patriarch Hank Mulders (#99) grabbed the early feature lead, with Kevin Hinds in his copper coloured #57 Grand Am slotting into second place after a tremendous jump up from his Row Five starting position. In full charge mode, Hinds out braked Mulders as the pair entered Turn Three on the second lap, assuming the race lead, a position that he would not relinquish. Following a furious, three car scramble, Nick Mulders (#89) emerged with the runner up spot, tenaciously holding on to Hinds. back bumper for the remaining 12 laps.

"I've been waiting all winter to get back in the car and onto the track, the neighbours get a little upset when I try to race on the street," laughed an exuberant Hinds. "The secret this year was the help I got from Trevor Coppins, who gave me advice on how to make this car handle better."

Duane Jeffery (#26 Camaro) crossed the stripe in a lonely third place, six car lengths behind the race leading duo, with past champions Kevin Pickford and Jeff Scott rounding out the top five.
